COLD WATER WOMEN
I’m excited to share the beginnings of a deeply personal project: COLD WATER WOMEN. This collection is inspired by the women I admire who grew up in cold climates like Alaska, Minnesota, Norway, and New England—places that require resilience and foster a profound connection to nature. Having grown up in a similar environment myself, I know firsthand how these landscapes shape both spirit and identity.
The Inspiration:
COLD WATER WOMEN is not just about the women shaped by these rugged regions; it’s about the way nature becomes an intrinsic part of who they are. There’s an irony to life in these places, as one woman I admire put it:
"Isn’t it ironic that people who grow up in a cold climate love spending so much time outside? In places where it’s cold and wet, and where the sun never rises for months, you find the most outdoorsy people there is."
This sentiment speaks to me deeply. I was born in Minnesota, where long winters and cold waters are a way of life, and where the harshness of the elements draws you closer to nature, not away from it. These are the places that become part of your identity.
A Personal Connection:
Growing up in this environment influenced not only who I am but also my artistic palette. The deep blues, icy whites, and muted greens of cold climates are my favorite colors to work with. They evoke the sense of calm, isolation, and awe I’ve always felt living in harmony with nature. In these regions, nature affects your daily life—storms, rain, snow, and the dark of winter aren’t just obstacles, they become part of you. The more you endure the tough times, the more you come to appreciate the beauty of those experiences and the summer months to come.
How do we play in our waters? How do we eat? What do we wear?
Artistic Vision:
Though the COLD WATER WOMEN collection is still in its early stages, I know that the color palette and textures will reflect the landscapes and the people who thrive in them.
This project will focus heavily on the relationship between nature and identity—how the cold shapes not only your environment but also your resilience, adaptability, and appreciation for the beauty that emerges in even the darkest seasons. It will focus on motherhood, outdoor recreation, and warmth.
